Rishiikaran Sivaskaran (Hindu College Jaffna) gave an excellent performance to score an unbeaten 7 ½ points to win the Northern Open event (Northern, North Central and Eastern) recently. He won 7 games – against Methiyugan Kavinaya, Keishan Deijan, Rithika Shamy, Sanjay Haneshkumar, Perinpanayagam Loghi, Vathmira Geesan and Nuwana Chamara respectively – and drew just one game: against Janukshan.

His performance earned him the Gold Medal and entry to the Major Division. Adshayan Senthilnathan (Hindu College Jaffna) and K. Sajeev (Hindu College Jaffna) came in second and third respectively after obtaining 7 points out of 8 games.

From the very beginning the tournament was exciting, with a couple of players in with a chance to win the gold medal. The seventh round proved to be the turning point. Rishiikaran required only half a point to take the overall lead and he successfully achieved that by sharing his game against B. Janukshan in the last round. Meanwhile, Adshayan and K. Sajeev were able to steal second and third spots in the leader board from the players who were occupying those spots at the end of the seventh round.

Top 29 players of the Northern Region Open event have qualified to the appropriate Majors Division Chess Championships to be held from late August 2021.
