The Government has failed to take any action regarding revelations made by former Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) Executive Director Thushan Gunawardena that recent gas cylinder explosions reported from several areas are due to changes in the chemical ratio of domestic gas cylinders, SJB MP Mujibur Rahman said in Parliament yesterday (24).

Rahman said, “Gunawardena, during an online interview, said a gas cylinder in Sri Lanka contains alkane butane and propane. He said the composition of the gas cylinder has been adjusted to 80 per cent butane and 20 per cent propane respectively because of the climate in Sri Lanka. According to him, this alkane composition had been changed by both Laugfs and Litro companies to 50 per cent of butane and 50 per cent of propane. He claims that this is behind recent gas cylinder explosions islandwide.”

Not only that, he also said that due to this alkane composition, a domestic gas cylinder can only be used for about 20 days, if it was used for about a month earlier. The current composition of alkane could lead to explosives. Despite these revelations made by Gunawardena, the Government has not taken any action regarding the matter, Rahman alleged. There were gas cylinder explosives in areas like Ratnapura and Weligama recently. Although the President, the subject minister, and state minister have been informed regarding this matter, no action has been taken so far. I will table all the documents related to this in Parliament, he added.
