A novel environmentally friendly face mask was launched by Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardane at the Ministry of Trade premises yesterday (8). The ‘Respirone Nano AV99’ face mask was invented by University of Peradeniya and manufactured by Sarasavi Industries Pvt Ltd.
Professor of Chemistry at the University of Peradeniya Gamini Rajapakse briefed the Media of some of the mask’s technical details. The mask itself, he said, is suitable for repeated usage and can be washed around 25 times without losing its ability to fend off bacteria and disease.
The professor noted that the average user can use the mask for a period of two to three months and that the mask is biodegradable, making it environmentally friendly, unlike other masks in the market.
He added that the mask has been designed with three layers of protection. The outer layer prevents the entry of water and dust particles, the middle layer is supposed to prevent bacteria and the third layer is designed to provide comfort for the wearer.
The outer layers have been manufactured using nanotechnology, Prof. Rajapakse said, which allows the mask to repel water droplets, making the mask entirely waterproof. The cotton cloth has been adapted with this nanotechnology making the mask one of a kind in the world, he went on to say.
Minister Gunawardane announced that the mask would be sold at Rs 200 at Sathosa outlets from today (9). He added that the University of Peradeniya has been working hard on this project and vouched that the mask has gone through all the necessary tests.
Responding to questions by the Media, the Minister said that exporting the mask is an option and the necessary information is being considered to determine if such a strategy is possible.
