Tamil United Freedom Party (TUFP) Leader and former LTTE militant Vinyagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman told a leading Tamil radio on 27 June that he is firm on working towards the release of Tamils detained under the Prevention of Terrorism (PTA) Act.

He told the interviewer that he will talk to the Government over their release. “After the war, some have been arrested for minor issues and detained for many years and they also should return to normal life since the war has now ended,” he added.

He said that nearly 13,000 Tamil combatants were rehabilitated and released and so, these PTA detainees should also be considered for release, adding that this matter should be taken up after the General Election is over.

“We need to work on a process and get them released.” He also added that the President and the Prime Minister have also reiterated about this matter and that after the Poll, this will happen, he added.
