Rat fever on the rise

Nearly 74 Leptospirosis- infected cases have been reported, since 1 January 2021, from various parts of the country. According to the Epidemiology Unit, the highest number of 12 cases has been reported from the Galle District. In addition 11 cases have been reported from the Badulla District.
Five patients have been reported from the Ratnapura District, where the highest number of patients was reported last year, 2020.
Also, according to data of the unit, the number of Leptospirosis infected cases reported last year has increased significantly compared to 2019. Although only 6,021 infected were reported in 2019, 8,364 patients were reported last year.
The highest number of infected reported last year was 1,560 from the Ratnapura District while the next highest of 1,197 was reported from the Galle District. The third highest infected of 1,073 patients was reported from the Kalutara District.
In addition, 660 infected cases were reported from the Kegalle District, 624 from the Matara District, 423 from the Colombo District and 407 from the Badulla District last year. However, no patients were reported from the Monaragala District.
The highest number of patients, 1,311, was reported in May last year. The next highest numbers were 1,188 in June and and 1,053 in September.
