The Gazette notification naming UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as UNP’s National List MP was issued by the Election Commission on Friday (18). His name was gazetted 10 months after the Parliamentary election. The UNP was smashed in the General Election of 2020 as the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna achieved a landslide victory.
The UNP, which is the oldest political party in Sri Lanka, failed to secure even a single seat save for one national list seat in Parliament, while the Samagi Jana Balwegaya led by then UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa became the main opposition party in the House.
Although the UNP Working Committee requested Wickremesinghe many times to accept the national list seat, the latter had reportedly turned down the offer on several occasions. However, the UNP nominated Wickremesinghe for its sole national list seat on 16 June. Wickremesinghe will be sworn in as an MP on 23 June.
