Railway staff lack protective gear – SLSMU
By Buddhika Samaraweera
General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Station Masters’ Union (SLSMU), Kasun Chamara, said the Railway Department has not provided hand sanitisers and facemasks to staff in railway stations since October 2020.
He said the Department had not paid enough attention to the health safety of its employees and passengers, given the spread of COVID-19. The Department normalised long-distance train services and all other train services, and in such a context, they should pay special attention to the health safety of staff and passengers, he added.
He also said in some railway stations, there were no facilities for passengers to even wash their hands. He said repeated reminders to Department Administration fell on deaf ears.
