News Purchasing paddy: Mill owners agree to Govt price regulation

Mill owners have agreed to purchase paddy from farmers at prices fixed by the Government. 

This decision was taken at a recent discussion between small, medium, and large-scale rice mill owners and Trade Minister, Dr. Bandula Gunawardena.

Speaking at the discussion, Dr. Gunawardena said the Government is not ready to increase the price of rice in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. He also said the aim of the Government is to protect farmers, rice mill owners, and consumers.

Meanwhile, the mill owners agreed to pay a maximum price of Rs 50 per kilo of Nadu and a maximum price of Rs 52 per kilo of Samba. The Minister further said steps would be taken to brief the President and the Prime Minister on the problems faced by rice mill owners.

State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Secretary to the Ministry of Trade Bhadrani Jayawardena, and Chairman of the Consumer Affairs Authority Hasitha Tillekeratne were also present at the discussion.
