Local Protest over fatal ferry capsize in Kinniya

Angry crowds protested in front of the Kinniya divisional secretariat following the fatal ferry capsize earlier in the day.

According to our correspondent, protestors burnt tyres on the road and threw stones at the secretariat building.

The police sent STF commandos to protect the place.

People accused authorities of not providing an alternative road to cross the lagoon, with the bridge at Kurunnankerni presently under repair, and deploying a makeshift ferry instead.

Their failure led to the loss of six lives and many others hospitalized, charged the protestors.

The dead include a 3 ½ year old and three schoolchildren.

Police say the ferry had lost balance and overturned, while transporting around 20 people in the morning.

The Navy has deployed eight teams to locate any missing persons following the incident.
