Local Protest in northern seas against Indian poaching

Around one hundred fishing boats staged a protest in the northern seas today (17) against poaching by Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan waters.

Displaying black flags with ‘#SaveOurFishermen’ written on them, they sailed from Mullaitivu to Point Pedro.

Accusing the subject minister of being inactive, they noted that ‘bottom trawling’ by Indian fishermen left ocean life completely devastated.

The fishermen demanded the authorities’ intervention to end encroachments by Indian fishing trawlers, attacks on Sri Lankan fishermen and the damaging of their fishing nets.

A long-standing issue, poaching by Indian fishermen has not yet been given a lasting solution.
