A group of inmates staged a protest yesterday (18), atop the roof of the Welikada Remand Prison, demanding that Court proceedings, which have slowed down due to COVID-19, be expedited.
Commissioner (Administration) of Prisons, Chandana Ekanayake, said the protest was launched by several inmates at the Welikada Remand Prison who also demanded expeditious granting of bail.
Prison officials with the assistance of the Special Task Force had beefed up security at the Prison. Recently, a group of inmates at the Kalutara Prison had also launched a protest with a similar demand the difference being they were claiming that delays had occurred in receiving the Government Analyst’s reports for their cases to be heard.
