Free phone calls facilities for prisoners
State Minister of Prison Reforms and Prisoner Rehabilitation, Sudarshini Fernandopulle, has taken steps to provide free telephone facilities for inmates to call their relatives and family members.
Due to the prevailing COVID-19 in Sri Lanka, families of inmates have lost the opportunity to visit them.
Minister Fernandopulle has instructed the Department of Prisons to allow inmates to speak to their homes via public telephones installed in prisons as inmates are unable to maintain contact with their relatives in such a situation.
The Minister has also requested Sri Lanka Telecom to facilitate the provision of such telephone calls free of charge for a period of one month.
Accordingly, detainees will be able to make free calls to their homes from today (16) onwards.
The inability of inmates to maintain contact with their relatives in a situation where the prison system is closed may cause the inmates' mental state to decline, allowing inmates to maintain contact with their homes by telephone is expected to alleviate some of the stress on the inmates. .
The Minister has also instructed the prison administration to take care of food and other needs of the inmates.
