Prisoner obtains Master’s Degree

Chandana Gurusingha, an inmate at the Welikada Prison has graduated with Master’s Degree (MA) in Sociology from the University of Kelaniya. He is the second inmate to complete an MA, while in Prison.
Indika Bamunusinghe, a former Police Sub Inspector, who was sentenced to death over the murder of Mohamed Siyam, was the first ever inmate to hold a Master’s degree in a similar field.
Under the guidance of the Commissioner of the Department of Prisons Chandana Ekanayake, Chandana Gurusingha will also pursue a Master’s degree in Philosophy at the University of Kelaniya, whilst in prison.
The Commissioner also said that Gurusingha has also completed the Buddhist Dharmacharya examination which he passed with distinction. He is also planning to publish a collection of poetry titled ‘Sipiri Geya Pamula’ and a book titled ‘Sanda Kidura Hira Gedara’.
