Local Primary sections of all schools to reopen on Monday

Primary sections of government and semi-government schools islandwide are scheduled to reopen on Monday (25), according to the Ministry of Education.

Secretary to the Ministry, Prof. Kapila Perera explained that this was the second stage in the initial four-stage plan to reopen schools.

In the first stage, primary sections of schools with less than 200 students were reopened to resume academic activities.

Perera explained that the decision to reopen schools from Grades 1 - 5 was taken since children aged below 12 do not require the COVID-19 vaccination.

He noted, however, that the previous guidelines issued by the Director General of Health Services (DGHS), Dr. Asela Gunawardena with regard to the reopening of schools must be strictly adhered to.

Meanwhile, the primary sections of all Catholic schools are also scheduled to reopen on Monday.

The Special Committe on COVID-19 Control decided to commence the primary sections and Grades 11 and 13 in all schools after having discussions with the education and health sectors, also paying special attention to the possibility of restarting tuition classes.
