Local Prices of lunch packets, fried rice to increase

Considering the prevailing shortage of vegetables and the increase in their prices, the All Island Canteen Owners’ Association (AICOA) says it will increase the prices of lunch packets and fried rice from today (23).

Speaking to Ceylon Today, AICOA Chairman Asela Sampath said prices for the aforesaid items will be increased by Rs 20 per packet, while the price of plain tea will increase by Rs 5.

“With the shortage and the increase in the prices of vegetables, the price of a lunch packet should be increased by Rs 20, in consideration of the continuation of the canteen owners, or else we will go bankrupt. We can’t add all the cheap vegetables to the lunch packets and especially when cooking fried rice it is expensive to purchase carrots since the Nuwara Eliya farmers refrain from farming due to the fertilizer issue,” he said.

He said the canteen industry is struggling due to the increasing prices of goods.

“People might refrain from buying cooked food from hotels and canteens. We are more humane than the government at this moment. We bore all the losses we incurred during the lockdowns without going for a price hike all of a sudden. Even now we are trying to increase the price of a lunch packet to provide nutritious food without limiting the rice packet menu  to the cheap vegetables in the market. The plain tea prices will be increased due to the price increase of sugar. We will not increase prices of any other food products other than the ones we’ve announced,” Sampath added.

Sampath also said  that due to the surging prices they expected the government to grant relief from the 2022 budget in order to protect the canteen industry,  but that they were devastated after listening to the budget speech.
