President, PM were amenable from the beginning – Ataullah
Leader of the National Congress MP M.L.M. Ataullah said he had held talks with both President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa on numerous occasions over the burial issue of COVID-19 victims.
He said both leaders were in favour of burials but the health officials continued to remain with the strict stance of mandatory cremation for all. The MP also said during the Government Parliamentary Group meeting held on 9 January chaired by the Premier, he had insisted on the importance of taking a concrete decision on the vexed issue.
He said the discussion the Prime Minister held with Buddhist monks on 10 February, the latter had consented to accept whatever decision that is taken by the Health Experts Committee in this regard. Ataullah added that under the present circumstances he was optimistic that the health authorities would take a positive stand by permitting the burial of COVID-19 victims.
