Local President directs officials to purchase COVID-19 vaccine boosters

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has instructed officials to take steps to order boosters for COVID-19 jabs now, considering the recommendations of the health experts. 

He made this remark during the meeting of COVID-19 special task force held today (10) at President’s office. 

The President noted that several countries have already ordered boosters to given the people who received two jabs of COVID-19 vaccines. Therefore, it is very important for Sri Lanka to prepare to obtain the boosters, he pointed out. 

Furthermore, he said that since a huge number of vaccine doses have been received now, those who are over 60 years and those who are suffering from non-communicable diseases should be given the jab as well. 

It was added that the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) has a developed special software for formal vaccination and the collection of data on all vaccinators, thus making it easier to set a date and time for the vaccination at the Grama Niladhari and Medical Officer of Health offices.

The Government expects to issue a vaccine certificate which is recognized by international community too, he added.

Several issues have been raised concerning the stringent procedure of postmortem PCR testing on those who have died of other causes. 

In response to the issues pertaining to the delay of the funeral procedures of non-COVID related  deaths, it was decided by the Committee that the funerals of such persons should be conducted within 24 hours.

Ministers Pavithra Wanniarachchi, Bandula Gunawardena, Johnston Fernando, Keheliya Rambukwella, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Prasanna Ranatunga, Rohitha Abeygunawardena, Namal Rajapaksa, State Ministers Sudarshani Fernandopulle, Channa Jayasumana, Member of Parliament Madura Vithanage, Secretary to the President PB Jayasundara, Chief Adviser to the President Lalith Weeratunga, Secretary to the Health (Retired) Major General Dr. Sanjeewa Munasinghe, Commanders of the Armed Forces and Heads of Health were also present  at the meeting.
