President Gotabaya Rajapksa has assured that a kg of paddy, produced with the use of carbonic fertiliser, will be priced at Rs 80, Minister of Lands S. M. Chandrasena said. Speaking at a Media briefing on Monday (25), he stated that over 90 per cent of those involved in protests against the shortage of fertiliser are those backed by politicians, including Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and the JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Acknowledging that there is a shortage of fertiliser, he added that the use of Phosphorus Nitrogen and Potassium are known to be essential compounds for the growth of crops while stating that the issue, however, crops up when these compounds are incorporated into chemical fertiliser. ‘’Alternatives are being formulated in a manner that crops receive these compounds without incorporating them in chemical fertiliser and the distribution to farmers has already commenced,’’ he said.
He further said a huge sum of money is spent on those suffering with kidney diseases due to the use of chemical fertiliser. Shifting to the use of carbonic fertiliser will help minimise the risk of kidney diseases and the amount allocated for such purpose could instead be allocated to provide concessions to consumers, he added.
