President assures price for paddy produced using organic fertilizer
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa assured that paddy produced with the use of organic fertilizer will be priced at Rs. 80 a kilo, Minister of Lands S.M. Chandrasena said.
Speaking at a media briefing today (25), he stated that over 90% of those involved in protests carried out against the shortage of fertilizer are those backed by politicians including the leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa and the leader of the JVP Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Acknowledging that there is a shortage of fertilizer, he added that phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium are known to be essential compounds for the growth of crops while stating the issue is however when these compounds are incorporated into chemical fertilizer.
‘’Alternatives are being formulated in a manner that crops receive these compounds without incorporating them into chemical fertilizer and the distribution to farmers have already commenced’’ he said.
He further said there is a huge amount of money spent on those suffering from kidney diseases arising due to the use of chemical fertilizer.
Shifting to the use of organic fertilizer will help minimize the risk of kidney diseases and the amount allocated for treatments could instead be allocated to provide concessions to consumers.
