Preschools, classes up to Grade 6 to open soon
Collaborative decisions would be taken by the Ministries of Health and Education to reopen schools, an official for the Health Ministry said.
The Official said yesterday (15), accordingly, the policy of re opening schools would have to be taken by the Ministry of Education while the Health Ministry would formulate rules, regulations and health guidelines that needed to be followed.
At a meeting presided over by Health Minister, Keheliya Rambukwella, it was revealed there were about 5,000 schools with less than 200 children in the country and those schools would be reopened as soon as possible. The focus is on starting education in preschools and classes up to Grade 6, the official said.
The Ministry of Education will decide on the dates on which to re-commence such schools. Accordingly, the discussion focused on the commencement of schools within the next two to three weeks. Quoting the Health Minister, the official said school teachers and non-academic staff of schools had been fully vaccinated. Those involved in school transport services who have not yet received the COVID jab will also be subjected to inoculation as early as possible.
Health Secretary, Maj. Gen. (Rtd), Dr. Sanjeewa Munasinghe, Education Secretary, Prof. Kapila Perera, Director General Health Services (DGHS), Dr. Asela Gunawardena, officials of the Ministry of Education, and representatives of the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) were also present.
