Post-New Year cluster surpasses all others

The post-New Year COVID-19 cluster has reached a startling 133,061 since 15 April 2021, the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) said. According to the data given by the NOCPCO yesterday (17), the number of COVID-19 cases from the New Year cluster surpassed the numbers diagnosed in all clusters that have emerged since Mar 2020.
The previous local clusters that emerged during the first COVID-19 wave which includes the Navy cluster and their close contacts amounted to 1,962 cases, while the imported cluster has a total of 5,031 cases. The Minuwangoda cluster and its extended cases have 3,059 cases while the Peliyagoda Fish Market and Extended Cases have a total 87,578.
The Centre noted that the total number that have tested PCR positive amounts to 230,691. Of them 194,144 have been discharged while the total active cases in country at present number 34,173. The NOCPCO data shows that Colombo alone has 58,151 coronavirus cases.
While Gampaha and Kalutara have 42,487 and 21,621 respectively. The NOCPCO notes that despite the grim view that the data represents there were Districts such as Polonnaruwa, Monaragala, and Mannar which have only seven, four and three PCR positive cases respectively.
