Police have arrested a group of motorcyclists for speeding and racing in the Piliyandala area on 14 January. Police arrested 12 suspects aged between 18 and 25.
All motorcycles have been impounded and cases have been filed against the suspects, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said. He also said that operations will continue to take actions against such motorcycle gangs.
Complaints are mounting against motorists and motorcycle gangs who violate speed limits following the tragic incident where two children were killed and a pregnant woman sustained critical injuries after being hit by a motorcyclist on a pedestrian crossing in Egoda Uyana, Moratuwa recently.
The two children, aged seven and one, succumbed to their injuries after being admitted to the Panadura Hospital.
The woman, who was in a critical condition, was transferred to the Colombo National Hospital for further treatment.
The Police, following the incident, took steps to ban illegal motorcycle racing at night and launched special operations to arrest errant riders.
