Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa visited the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MPs, who were staging a protest near the ornamental pond facing the ceremonial drive, in front of the entrance to the foyer of the Parliament and had a cordial discussion with them.

The SJB MPs staged a protest boycotting yesterday’s (6) Parliamentary sitting, demanding the Speaker to ensure their safety inside Parliament.

They held placards with slogans such as ‘Miriskudu Balakaya Rata Yalith Wanasai’ (Chili Powder Gang Destroys the Country Again).

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, who spoke after the protest, criticised Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, alleging that the latter acts in a biased manner. He said that a gang of Government MPs tried to assault SJB MP Manusha Nanayakkara and that the Speaker should take actions against them.

The Premier, who visited the protesting MPs, recalled how he led such protests in the past. Rajapaksa said he advised the Opposition to gather support of more MPs when staging protests.
