Petition filed against Sinopharm use
A Fundamental Rights (FR) petition has been filed before the Supreme Court against the use of Sinopharm vaccine until the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) approves its safety and good quality.
The petition was filed before the Supreme Court today (09) by Attorney-at-Law Gauri Thawarasa on behalf of the President of the People’s Movement for the Rights of Patients (PMRP) Louis Benedict and Joint Secretary Christine Perera.
The petition cites 24 respondents including Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi, State Minister of Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals Professor Channa Jayasumana and NMRA officials.
The petitioners pointed out that the removal of duly appointed members of the Expert Committee, who were appointed to study the safety and efficacy of the vaccine prior to its arrival, by NMRA has adverse repercussions on the people and violates Article 12(1) of the Constitution.
They urged the Court to direct the respondents to submit details of the said Committee and information sought from the manufacturer by them.
