Parliamentary Council approves judicial appointments

The Parliamentary Council (PC) concurred with the proposal of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to appoint Justice Arjuna Obeysekera, President of the Court of Appeal as a Judge of the SC, the post which fell vacant following the retirement of Justice Sisira de Abrew.

This decision was taken at the PC meeting held on 8 May in Parliament, chaired by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena. The PC concurred with the proposal to appoint K.P. Fernando, Judge of the Court of Appeal to the post of President of the Court of Appeal, which will fall vacant with the appointment of the incumbent President of the Court of Appeal as a Judge of the SC. Meanwhile, the PC also agreed to appoint Sasi Mahendran, High Court Judge as a Judge of the Court of Appeal, the post which will fall vacant with the appointment of K.P. Fernando, Judge of the Court of Appeal as the President of the Court of Appeal. 

In addition, the PC has agreed to appoint SC Judge L.T.B Dehideniya as a member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of former Supreme Court Judge de Abrew.
