Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) Leader, SJB Parliamentarian Rauff Hakeem tested positive for COVID-19. Hakeem tweeted that he had contracted the virus and was in the process of admitting himself to a quarantine facility.
He requested all those who came into contact with him during the past 10 days to take necessary health and safety precautions.
Meanwhile, Kumarasiri Hettige, Political Affairs Coordinating Secretary of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has also tested positive and had visited Parliament on Friday (8).
Parliament Serjeant-at-Arms Narendra Fernando said approximately 25 primary contacts of both Hakeem and Hettige were identified. This includes 15 MPs and four staff members of Parliament.
Fernando said Hakeem attended Sittings only on 5 January. He said they could identify Hakeem’s close contacts using CCTV footage in the House, and once identified they would be directed to quarantine centres.
“He was in Parliament for less than three hours. According to CCTV footage available, he spent time at the Parliament Chamber with MPs Thalatha Athukorala, Gayantha Karunathilaka and M.A. Sumanthiran. They have been informed to take precautionary measures against COVID-19,” he said.
Measures have been taken to conduct around 300 PCR and Rapid Antigen Tests for Parliament staff next week, Fernando said.
