Police Department sources said the Padukka Police OIC, who came under criticism by three well-known politicians of the Government, has decided to prematurely retire from service citing mental anguish. The sources said once his retirement letter was sent to IGP C.D. Wickremaratne, the OIC has decided to go abroad for fresh employment.
Padukka Police OIC Chief Inspector Ajith Nissanka, who had served as OIC at four different Police Stations during his 11-year stint with the Police Department, was transferred to the Nittambuwa Police Station recently.
Though the transfer was due to an incident that had occurred at the Padukka Police Station, the OIC is reportedly discontent with the conduct of senior officers in the Police Department over the incident. Sources stated that at the time of the particular incident, OIC Nissanka had been off duty.
Though the Media had begun to speculate that the OIC had reportedly been transferred due to political intervention, the Minister of Public Security has maintained that the transfer was made on instruction received from the Ministry Secretary.
However, Ministers Sarath Weerasekera, Gamini Lokuge and SLPP MP Jagath Kumara had issued contradictory Media statements regarding the transfer of OIC Nissanka. Previously, the former Padukka Police OIC had served in a similar capacity at Wanduramba, Alawwa and Akuressa Police Stations. Sources added the transfer was a hot topic of discussion in the Police Department as well.
