Authorities of the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) are expediting the opening of its Duty-Free Area.
As Sri Lanka Tourism is gearing to launch tourism from today (20) amidst the COVID-19 outbreak in the country, the Arrival and Departure Lounge at the MRIA has no facilities, mainly food and beverages, to cater to the travellers.
Sri Lanka Tourism has launched a tourism initiative under a bio-bubble and the Government is expecting a manageable number of 3,300 tourists per day at the MRIA and at the BIA as well.
Director of Operations at the MRIA, Shehan Sumanasekara, told Ceylon Today that the Duty-Free Area has been planned and they are in the process of obtaining permissions. “We are following government protocols which is causing the delay, but we have found a solution and in another few weeks, the Duty-Free Shopping Area will be launched,” he added.
