Opening of liquor stores islandwide: Amaraweera calls for investigation
By Thameenah Razeek
Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has requested a thorough investigation into the opening of liquor stores islandwide, as well as who gave permission for them to open during the strict curfew. He said a hidden hand may be behind this. Thus, the Minister has asked the Finance Minister to look into the matter.
He further said it is hard to believe that the Excise Commissioner inadvertently ordered the opening of wine stores, and that an investigation should be conducted immediately. "Keeping wine stores open during curfew is unacceptable," the Minister added.
“People should not operate wine stores at a time when essential commodities are restricted,” the Minister said. “We demand that the Finance Ministry and other authorities undertake a thorough probe into what went wrong,”Amaraweera added.
