OIC transferred for failing in duty – Weerasekera
Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekera says the OIC of the Padukka Police Station had been transferred over his failure to provide adequate security to a mother and her daughter, who had visited the Police Station for official work.
He said both the mother and the daughter had been kept waiting at the Station till midnight by the OIC concerned and noted that it had come to light that despite the presence of the OIC, a Police officer at the Station had attempted to molest the daughter.
He made this remark in response to criticism directed at him by SLPP MP Jagath Kumara on the recent transfer of the Padukka Police OIC. The Minister noted that if females are to be accommodated at a Police Station then such acts need to be carried out with the presence of female police officers and asserted that at the time of the alleged incident both the mother and daughter had not been provided with adequate security.
Weerasekera charged that MP Kumara had pressured him to overturn the OIC’s transfer both orally and in writing but insisted that the OIC had been transferred by the IGP with the consent of the Public Service Commission.
