Nuwara Eliya can be developed as a major tourist hub: PM
A meeting was held at Parliament yesterday (21) under the patronage of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to discuss development activities in the Nuwara Eliya District in line with the tourist promotion program for major cities in Sri Lanka.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister stated that authorities should be focused on making Nuwara Eliya and its environs a suitable tourist destination for local and foreign tourists.
The Prime Minister also instructed to develop the area around Lake Gregory and the Race Course.
Under this project, Nuwara Eliya will be brought to maximum development and will be able to resume equestrian competitions, improve the quality of existing parks in the city, develop sports facilities in the city of Nuwara Eliya, protect sensitive ecological zones in the area, launch cable car projects and a theme park.
Pointing out that the road development work in Nuwara Eliya is in final stages, the Prime Minister said that at the request of Minister of State Jeevan Thondaman, attention has been focused on the implementation of a project to remove more than 3000 shanties located in Hatton and provide houses to those shanty dwellers.
Special attention was paid to the development activities of Hatton city and the Prime Minister also instructed to develop the area from Hatton to Talawakele, Sri Pada by improving facilities.
Under this, the Castlereagh Reservoir area will also be upgraded for tourists and the conservation of the Kotagala wetland will be expedited.
