North Central Province teacher shortage to be addressed soon – Education Ministry
By Thameenah Razeek
Measures are to be taken soon to eliminate the shortage of nearly 3,000 teachers in the North Central Province, especially to fill the vacancies of principals in many schools, and that 166 new principals will be recruited within the next two weeks, Education Minister Professor G.L. Peiris said.
It was revealed that there are 40 schools in the Polonnaruwa District without drinking water and steps are being taken to arrange for clean drinking water and sanitation facilities with the assistance of non-State-run companies before next year.
He said the Government has to stand up for issues such as teacher transfers, the enrolment of children in schools, and access to employment opportunities for the many people who come to the Isurupaya every week from different parts of the country. He said that instead of bringing them to the Isurupaya, officials are planning to go to the people to solve their problems.
