No legal action taken against Hizbullah
The Government has failed to initiate any legal action against former Governor of the Eastern Province, M.L.A.M. Hizbullah, over various illegal activities that have taken place during the construction of the Batticaloa Campus owned by him, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Dr. Kavinda Jayawardena stressed.
He said according to facts revealed so far and the findings of the Parliamentary Sectoral Oversight Committee that investigated matters related to the Batticaloa Campus, there is a possibility of taking legal action against Hizbullah under the Money Laundering Act.
The Sectoral Oversight Committee even recommended that the Batticaloa Campus and all its properties be taken over by the Government. But more than a year after coming to power, this Government has not taken any action in that regard, he said.
He added that although it had been nearly two years since the Easter Sunday bombings, the Government had not yet carried out a proper investigation and punished the culprits.
“So far the suspects are only being detained in prisons. The Government has not been able to prosecute and punish the culprits. It is a case for worry. In particular, the US recently filed charges against three suspects who are being held in custody here with regard to Easter Sunday bombings. But Sri Lanka has not yet been able to prosecute,” he said.
He was speaking at a recent Media briefing at the Opposition Leader’s Office in Colombo.
