Sri Lanka Coastguard (SLCG) life savers serving in life saving posts in Mirissa, Bentota, Mt Lavinia, and Gopalpuram, Trincomalee rescued nine locals from drowning in five rescue attempts made over the weekend, SLCG said.

They included a 24-year-old male from Malabe rescued from the seas close to Mirissa Beach, six males from Rajagiriya, Balangoda and Hatton were rescued in Mt Lavinia, a 29- year-old female from Anuradhapura was rescued  in the vicinity of Gopalpuram beach in Trincomalee while a 30-year-old male from Bentota was rescued at Bentota beach.

So far, SLCG life savers have rescued 1,618 including 713 foreigners in a number of successful rescue attempts since the setting up of the SLCG Life Saving Unit in 2009.
