Cabinet endorsed a proposal to bring nine district base hospitals under the purview of the Ministry of Health. This decision has been taken to improve the quality, equity, and efficiency of the service and to ease the administrative tasks.

Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi proposed that the district base hospitals of Matale, Nawalapitiya, Embilipitiya, Avissawella, Gampaha, Mannar, Vavuniya, Kilinochchi, and Mullaitivu, which are currently governed by Provincial Councils and fall under the category of tertiary health services institutions, be brought under the purview of the Ministry of Health.

Cabinet Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said yesterday (15) at the weekly Cabinet Media briefing at the Department of Government Information that the Government plans to upgrade one selected hospital in each district, by providing facilities such as theatres and laboratories which are currently available at the National Hospital in Colombo.
