News New Parliament to meet on 20 August

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on 3 August issued a proclamation by way of Gazette Extraordinary No. 2187/2, summoning the new Parliament to meet on 20 August 2020.

The proclamation states, although a previous proclamation was published in the Gazette Extraordinary No. 2165/8 on 2 March 2020 in reference to dissolution of Parliament with effect from the midnight of 2 March. Consequently fixing of the date for the Election of Members to Parliament on 25 April and setting the date for the new Parliament to meet on 14 May, was negated due to the ensuing COVID-19 pandemic.

The Election Commission by Gazette Notification No. 2179/17 on 10 June notified that the General Election would be held today (5). Thereby, the proclamation was made by Rajapaksa in virtue of the powers vested in him by Article 70(1) of the Constitution read with Sub-Paragraph (c) of Paragraph 2, of Article 33.
