New Kelani Bridge adds colour to Colombo
Pictures show the illuminated new Kelani Bridge, which is an extradoses type engineering design that uses stay cables to connect two main pylons with the bridge deck and share the weight of the bridge deck’s loads. Recently, engineers tested the lighting systems of the new bridge, which is set to open soon.
Highways Minister Johnston Fernando directed his Ministry to illuminate the bridge to attract both domestic and international visitors. Fernando stated that in 2014, thenPresident Mahinda Rajapaksa, in his capacity as Minister of Highways, initiated the New Kelani Bridge project and signed for the plans and approval.
He went on to say that the bridge would adorn the Kelani River and enhance the splendour of the capital, and that it would soon become a landmark attraction for both local and foreign tourists. (TR)
