By Faadhila Thassim
The Expert Committee appointed to draft a new Constitution has completed the preliminary draft and it has been sent to the Legal Draftsman’s Department for finalising, Foreign Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris said. Speaking at a Media briefing yesterday (18), Prof. Peiris added that the final draft will most likely be submitted to the Government at the end of 2021. He said the Budget proposals will be presented to Parliament on 12 November, while the Budget vote will be held on 10 December, and the Legislature would be able to focus on the new Constitution from January 2022.
“President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in his manifesto ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour’ pledged to prepare a new Constitution and accordingly an expert committee was appointed. Since the 1978 Constitution, there have been several changes in society and as the Constitution is the Supreme Law of the land, it has to change accordingly,” Prof. Peiris pointed out.
