Minister of Education Professor. G.L. Peiris said the proposed new Constitution would be tabled in Parliament this year. The expert team appointed for the task, led by Romesh de Silva (PC), is currently drafting the new Constitution.
“There is an urgent need for a new Constitution since the present Constitution is outdated. The Constitution formulated in 1978 does not suit current issues and political changes,” he noted.
Prof. Peiris expressed these views after calling on the Chief Prelates of the Malwatte and Asgiri Chapters in Kandy.
