New circular to fast track child abuse trials
The Judicial Service Commission has issued a Circular to streamline and expedite child abuse trials in the High Courts upon the request of the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA), NCPA Chairman Prof. Muditha Vidanapathirana said.
The Circular issued on 28 July introduces a separate coding system to make it easier and more accurately identify child abuse cases pending in the High Courts. Prof. Vidanapathirana said the NCPA requested the Judicial Service Commission to allocate all child abuse High Court trials to one day of the week, so its officers can assist victims, offenders and witnesses effectively. In that particular day of the week, the NCPA requested to give priority to child abuse trails. Following the NCPA’s request the Commission has introduced a yellow sticker to mark child abuse case files so they can be easily identified.
