Over 400 species of saplings were planted at Nawalakanda, Balagala Dola Reserve during a tree planting programme organised by the Nawalakanda Samanala Youth Club, said President of Nawalakanda Samanala Youth Club, Peshala Pasan Karunaratne. He said Nawalakanda village in the Walallavita Divisional Secretariat Division in Kalutara District is a place which is rich in biodiversity.
There are also several protected areas belonging to the Department of Forest Conservation. However, with the recent development and illegal activities, the threat to the environment has increased day-by-day, he added. In order to minimise the threat, the tree planting programme was implemented with the guidance of the Walallavita Divisional Secretariat. Planting trees on both sides of the river that flows through the area was implemented in several phases and the last phase was successfully completed on 21 September, said Karunaratne.
