Navy seizes 219kg heroin in Weligama
A special search operation conducted by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) in the coastal area of Polwathumodara, Weligama, Matara on Saturday night (12), led to the seizure of over 219 kg of heroin worth nearly Rs 2 billion, which was attempted to be smuggled into the island by sea and the arrest of nine suspects, SLN said.
This special anti-drug operation conducted by the SLN led to the seizure of this stock of about 219.8 kg of heroin which was attempted to be smuggled into the country in a dinghy through Polwathumodara area in Weligama and hidden before final distribution, after first having brought to the sea off Weligama by a multi-day fishing trawler, SLN said.
The consignment had been concealed in sacks and gas cylinders. SLN also seized the multi-day fishing trawler and a dinghy. Nine suspects were arrested in connection with this racket. The multi-day fishing trawler seized by the SLN on suspicion of smuggling heroin had left the Kottegoda Fisheries Harbour, Matara on 11 May 2021 and it is suspected that the consignment of narcotics was taken to the trawler from foreign smugglers in international waters.
Meanwhile, the street value of the seized consignment of heroin is believed to be over Rs 1,758 million. The operation was conducted adhering to COVID-19 protocols in place to prevent the spread of the virus. The suspects arrested during this operation are residents of Weligama, Ahangama, Dikwella, Kottegoda, Ihalawatta, Mirissa, Polwathumodara and Piliyandala and are aged 26 to 43 years. SLN and the Police Narcotics Bureau are conducting further investigations. (PA)
