Nationwide Ops Needed to Save Children from Predators – Gammanpila
BY THAMEENAH RAZEEK
A nationwide operation should be conducted to save children who have been exposed to child labour and are subjected to various sorts of violence including from sexual predators, Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila said. He made this statement while speaking at a special programme in Colombo on the topic of ‘doing justice to Ishalini and ending child abuse’.
Ishalini, who died while working as a domestic helper at the home of former Minister Rishad Bathiudeen, was just another blossoming flower, stained by sinners in this country, according to the Minister. He stated that no one should believe that apprehending the perpetrators and interrogating them over Ishalini’s death has resolved the issue, adding that more children like Ishalini are living in this country under torture and concealed in mansions.
“Some children sleep in dog cages, and stories like this are widely circulated these days. So we’re not just talking about Ishalini here; we’re also talking about other flowers languishing in mansions as a result of slavery,” he explained. Putting the responsibility on the Government, he stated that it is their responsibility to figure out what should be done to stop the threat.
He also stated that people should be trained on how to confront anyone who physically or mentally disturbs youngsters. “As a result, you young people have a responsibility to expose these offenders to the world without thinking he’s your uncle, brother, or other family member. More youngsters like Ishalini will be protected if you join the huge national operation,” he stated.
Instead of wishing Ishalini Nirvana, he asked the young people of this country to take responsibility for ending the story of these daughters, which has been told throughout history.
