By Naalir Jamaldeen
State Minister of Ornamental Fish, Inland Fish and Prawn Farming, Fishery Harbour Department, Multi Day Fishing Activities and Fish Exports, Kanchana Wijesekara, said that the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) had informed him that fish harvested from the vicinity of the recent X-Press Pearl disaster is safe for consumption.
Various parties say that eating fish harvested from the disaster site may carry health risks since chemical leaked from the burnt vessel had mixed with the sea water. Wijesekara said that such views have been circulating on social media recently. According to NARA’s preliminary investigation report there is no such risk from consuming fish from the aforesaid area, he added.
