The Greek Captain of the crude oil tanker MT New Diamond, Stereo Ilias, yesterday (14) pleaded guilty to the charges filed against him, in relation to the blaze on the vessel and was fined Rs 12 million by Colombo High Court Judge, Dhammika Ganepola.
Subsequently, Attorney General Dappula de Livera sought a Court Order for compensation in a sum of Rs 200 million. However, Justice Ganepola ruled that the accused be released after the settlement of a fine of Rs 12 million.
While the Deputy Solicitor General, on behalf of the AG, requested for a Court Order to pay compensation, the Judge said it would not be granted, as issuing such an order would be prejudicial to both parties.
The case was called up for hearing after the lawyers for the accused had filed a motion in Court, at the previous hearing, in order to have the case heard swiftly.
On 8 October, de Livera filed indictments against the Captain of the ship, over the oil spill that occurred after the tanker caught fire and his failure to report the blaze to the concerned parties, thereby violating Sections 26 and 38 of the Marine Environment Pollution Authority (MEPA) Act.
