News Mt Lavinia DC gets upgrades from Justice Ministry

Minister of Justice Ali Sabry provided the District Court (DC) of Mount Lavinia with ICT equipment in recognition of its District Judge, Court staff and Members of the Bar decision to hold virtual hearings since 1 September 2021. The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) stated that providing these facilities is an outcome of a recent decision taken by the Ministry to identify requirements of Courts Islandwide and create a database to fulfil them with MoJ officers making special visits to Courts towards this purpose. “Under Phase One of the programme, ICT and technical equipment worth Rs 30 million and office furniture worth Rs 8 million will be distributed among Courts and procurement for Phase Two has also commenced. 

In addition, a special mechanism has been devised to carry out minor refurbishments of Court houses through the support of respective Divisional Secretaries,” the MoJ added. Justice Ministry Secretary Priyantha Mayadunne, Additional Secretary Thushara Suraweera, Private Secretary to the Minister Janaka Ranatunga, Chief Legal Advisor of the Civil Law Reforms Sub-committee Lasitha Kanuwanaarachchi, Director Reforms Madhushanka Dissanayake, President of the Mt Lavinia Bar Association Jagath Halpandeniya were present at this event.
