Over 800,000 COVID-19 detection tests were carried out by the State sector in the month of August alone, Deputy Director General of Laboratory Services, of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Sudath Dharmaratne said.
He added the allegations made in regards to a reduction in tests are false. He added that over 800,000 tests carried out for the month of August include over 300,000 PCR tests and over 500,000 Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT).
He said there are 31 State sector laboratories with a capacity of more than 20,000 PCR tests per day adding that there has also been an increase in RAT in the hospital level, MOH level and the laboratory level. Dr. Dharmaratne stated it is with this increased amount of testing that a reduction in the number of COVID-19 cases have been identified.
Two main reasons for the decline in the number of positive cases is the vaccination programme and the implementation of prevention strategies, he added. He further said in order to continue with the drop in the number of positive cases, the public has to ensure they follow health guidelines and avoid unnecessary gathering and movement.
