The Government has instructed specialists attached to the University of Moratuwa to assess if there has been any air pollution as a result of the fire that broke out in the MV X-Press Pearl Vessel, SLPP MP Dilan Perera said. He added that the assessment of pollution caused by way of the fire will not be limited to the impact on the marine environment but will cover every aspect including possible air pollution.
Perera further added that there has not been an oil leak reported from the vessel thus far stating that such leak was the most feared repercussion as it would immensely affect the environment. He further stated that when assessing the impact of the fire on the fisheries industry, one main consideration will be that of the number of days where fishermen were unable to engage in fishing activities and the loss incurred as a result.
“Over 90 per cent of fish deaths reported following the fire were as a result of the consumption of plastic particles that were released due to the fire and not due to chemicals released by the vessel,” he added. Perera was speaking at a Media briefing yesterday (8).
