Ministry of Trade Advised to Maintain Standards

The Ministry of Trade has been advised to maintain proper standards of all food items issued to the market and that the Government was responsible for the safety of people’s food,Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa told Ceylon Today.

The Premier pointed out that required facilities must be provided for the consumer to make purchases during the festive season, goods of proper standard, at guaranteed prices with the Ministry of Trade overseeing the distribution to prevent shortages. 

Rajapaksa said the Government had taken a policy decision to create a food culture sans toxicity and chemicals and to raise the standard of the economy. Relevant institutions have been instructed to act accordingly. 

He also said, when Sathosa and the co-operatives which had collapsed are strengthened and goods are provided through them at concessionary prices, the private sector will be motivated to compete and then it will turn out to be advantageous for the people.
