Ministry changes selection rules

The Sports Ministry has gazetted new regulations to the Sports Law on 23 September, where it has strengthened and empowered the National Selection Committee, which will henceforth be referred to as the ‘National Sports Selection Committee’, to ensure a fair and transparent selection process when it comes to National sports.
Accordingly, the National Sports Selection Committee is empowered with selecting all Selection Committees of National Sports Associations.
“The power of making recommendations in respect of appointing the Selection Committee of all National Sports Associations/Federations should be vested only in the National Sports Selection Committee and the particulars about dates, venues, relevant details and selection criteria of the selection trials should be informed to the athletes before 14 days. The copies of all such details should be presented in writing to the National Sports Selection Committee also on the same day. The National Sports Selection Committee has the power to cancel the selection trials of the National Sports Associations/Federations that do not present such particulars and the selection trials held on personal discretion of the President/Secretary and Coaches of National Sports Associations/Federations, as well as the selections made thereby. (Stated in 6(e) regulation of the gazette).
Further, according to 6(f) regulation all National Sports Associations should present selection criteria to the National Sports Selection Committee 28 days prior to selection. Also, selection criteria should be published in the official website of the Association, as well as Sports Ministry under that particular sport, and selected list of athletes too should be published in the same manner.
Also, as per the 6(G) regulation, a particular Project Officer who is responsible for the relevant sport at the Department of Sports Development, should be informed and should participate for the trial.
According to 6(H), following a trial the respective Association should forward attendance sheet of the selectors’ list of participating athletes, a record describing way of selection and selected athletes list and their performance to the National Sports Selection Committee on the same day of the trial or the following day.
National Sports Selection Committee has been empowered to conduct inquiries into any protest, investigation into complaint or appeals. National Sports Selection Committee should maintain a database of all National pools and bios of respective athletes.
Nominations for international events when selecting Coaches, Managers, trainers, masseurs, shouldn’t be given without permission from the National Sports Associations, and an appropriate method should be taken to select candidates for those posts considering their contribution in the field, present performance, knowledge, understanding, experience and skills.
